Employee Survey Tip 3: Using the Right Question Types

Questions can be distinguished by their function, for example:

  • Icebreaker/introductory questions to open the survey,

  • Transition questions,

  • Buffer questions,

  • Follow-up questions,

  • Filter questions to screen out irrelevant target groups,

  • Control questions (plausibility/truthfulness checks)

Questions can also be distinguished by their degree of standardisation, by how they are phrased (direct, indirect, difficult) and more!

Advantages and disadvantages of different question types

With the LamaPoll survey tool, you can create almost any conceivable question type. In the survey tool's editor, we provide over 70 different question templates and types. To use them effectively, you should familiarise yourself with the advantages and disadvantages of the most important question types:

  • Choice questions: Choice questions are the classic among all question types. You can vary them, design them however you like, and enrich them with comment and Other fields. Choice questions can be single-select or multi-select (only one item clickable or several items clickable), and can be displayed horizontally, vertically, in a drop-down list, and much more. Choice questions are not just simple yes/no questions. You can also set images as answer options, display live results, and assign rating points in the background for later analysis. Choice questions have no disadvantages whatsoever!
  • Ranking questions: With a ranking question, employees can drag and drop important elements upward and less important elements downward. An alternative is the input question, where employees distribute a set number of points across important and less important elements as they see fit.
  • Matrix questions: Matrix questions have the advantage that a large number of aspects can be surveyed fairly compactly at once. However, matrix questions very often lead to high drop-out rates. A long table with lots of small boxes and circles to click often puts people off. So ask yourself whether you really need that much information, since you risk getting fewer responses in the end.

Tip: Sometimes it is better to use several small questions instead of one long matrix question, even if this makes your questionnaire much longer! The matrix question is more compact, but offers no variety, resulting in far more boredom and possibly even frustration!

  • Rating questions: Rating questions are essentially comparable to choice questions, except that the answers are already assigned points, i.e. ratings. This can make the analysis much easier, as you get not only the frequency of the answers given but also average values, variance and more!
  • Input questions: Input questions are versatile and flexible. They allow multi-line comment fields, short "Other" fields, date entries, email fields with validity checks, whole numbers, decimal numbers, time entries, initial texts and much more!
