Employee survey: defining your target groups

Target group: who should take part in the survey?

Think carefully about exactly who you want to survey. The entire workforce? Just a sample? Or perhaps specific areas and departments?

The right decision depends on your goals and focus. Make it deliberately, as it affects how well the survey is accepted. For example, you might decide to survey only every second employee so as not to “bother” the entire workforce. The other half may then feel sidelined.

It can also make sense to survey only specific departments, such as customer service or production. In that case, however, you should include the entire department. If you want to analyse results by department or location, define the groups so that no conclusions can be drawn about individuals. Find out more under Anonymity in employee surveys.

Survey everyone or a sample?

If you survey everyone, you invite all employees. This signals that every opinion counts and allows you to analyse results for individual areas. A sample reduces the effort involved, but carries the acceptance risk described above and often yields too few responses for small areas. If you plan to analyse results by area, surveying everyone is therefore usually the better choice.

Groups that are easily overlooked

Check whether your target group also includes these employees: part-time and shift workers, field staff and employees at other sites, apprentices and working students, employees on parental leave or extended absence, and agency workers. Decide in advance who is included and communicate this openly.

If you decide to survey the entire workforce, some groups may need their own questions (see also: How to reach every employee for your survey).

With LamaPoll, you can send separate invitations to individual departments and use branching to guide each group through the questions relevant to them.
