8 golden rules for increasing employee satisfaction
1. Listen carefully to your employees
Listen carefully to what your employees have to say. Give your workforce a channel through which they can communicate feedback, criticism and their needs. What employees have to say comes directly from the heart of your business processes, and remember: your employees are often closer to your customers than senior management is.
2. Praise and recognise, but do not play favourites
Give praise where it is due. It can bring real benefits. There is no need to overdo it, but make sure you do not consistently favour some employees over others. Unless, of course, your aim is to create pressure and establish a climate of fear. Sustained pressure and a fear-driven working environment can undermine motivation, trust and collaboration.
3. Allow flexibility and focus on results
Everyone has their own working rhythm and internal clock. Where possible, allow flexible working hours. If employee A works more efficiently in the afternoon, it may be better for your company if they are able to start later.
4. Pay fairly
Your workforce wants to be paid fairly. Large pay differences between equally qualified employees tend to come to light sooner or later and can lead to considerable dissatisfaction and mistrust of your company.
5. Offer opportunities for further development
Meet your employees' desire to develop by creating opportunities for further training and personal growth. Qualified employees are valuable employees, both to you and to your company.
6. Involve your employees
Instructions that appear pointless can lead to employee dissatisfaction and a higher error rate. Involve your employees in your company's strategy so that everyone understands the purpose of their work and the value it creates.
7. Evaluate results
Give your employees room to work independently. Employees want to solve tasks themselves and experience the sense of appreciation that comes with it. Evaluate the results, not the route taken to get there. Encourage creativity among your workforce and gain insights into better approaches.
8. Encourage team building
Team building increases employee productivity (Hawthorne effect) and meets social needs. It can also create a positive working atmosphere and support trusting collaboration.
