Five approaches and uses of employee surveys
Employee surveys cannot always be divided neatly into distinct types. Depending on the objective, the analysis and the way the survey is embedded in the organisation, several approaches may overlap. The following five approaches show how employee surveys are typically designed and used:
- Opinion survey: This approach aims to build a picture of employees’ views and attitudes. Questions may focus on motivation, collaboration, leadership, engagement or the workplace climate. Depending on the target group, the survey may cover the entire workforce, an individual department or a particular management level.
- Benchmarking survey: The focus here is on comparing selected metrics. Results can be compared over several survey periods, across sites or departments, or against external reference values. Benchmarking is therefore less a survey topic in its own right than a way of analysing and interpreting results.
- Systemic employee survey: With this approach, the survey is firmly embedded in company processes and conducted regularly. The results feed into decisions and improvement measures. Integrating the survey tool with existing IT systems can support this process.
- Workplace climate survey with feedback: This survey focuses in particular on the working atmosphere, collaboration and internal communication. What matters is how the results are handled afterwards: they are shared with those involved, discussed together and used to make practical improvements.
- Survey as part of organisational development and change: During restructurings, new ways of working or other change initiatives, a survey can help make employees’ expectations, questions and concerns visible at an early stage. The aim is to shape change more effectively and strengthen long-term competitiveness.
