Step 1: Create the survey homepage

Use the homepage to engage participants

The homepage, or welcome page, is the first thing participants see. It needs to motivate, inform and build trust. What should you consider?

What is the homepage?

As the name suggests, the homepage is the first page of your questionnaire. It shapes the participant’s first impression. Use it to welcome visitors, share the key information and motivate them to complete the questionnaire. We recommend avoiding questions here and using a text block instead. Our survey tool includes templates for the homepage as well as templates and examples for the survey invitation.

Questionnaire homepage examples and templates

Once you have created a survey and given it a suitable name, you can add pages in a similar way to PowerPoint. A survey should have several pages, if only so that participants can interrupt it and resume on the same page later. The homepage with the welcome text and the final, or “thank you”, page are particularly important.

Homepage checklist

Important content for the first page of your online survey includes:

  • Welcome
  • Framework: How long will participation take? When does the fieldwork period end?
  • Content: What is it about? For example, “Satisfaction with the workplace”
  • Objective: For example, improving satisfaction
  • Data protection: Information and explanations, including links to privacy policies
  • Anonymity: Information and explanations about anonymity, or the lack of anonymity
  • A note that participation is voluntary
  • A contact person for questions

Example of the first page or invitation letter

Dear [Employee name],

As announced, we would like to invite you warmly to take part in our employee survey.

It is important for us to understand how satisfied you are with our organisation and which strengths and weaknesses you have identified. We therefore ask you to complete the questionnaire fully and to the best of your knowledge.

Tip: As you have already explained the purpose and importance of the survey to your employees in advance, it is enough to mention the objective briefly in one sentence here.

You can take part in the survey on any internet-enabled device. If you need to interrupt the questionnaire, you can do so at any time and continue later. The survey is open for responses until [date].

Tip: Prize draws are often used in employee surveys too. They can create additional interest and add an element of enjoyment. Where appropriate, you can mention a prize draw here.

If you have any questions, please contact [Insert contact name] [Insert contact details].

Please follow the link to the questionnaire: [Link]

Thank you in advance for taking part.

Kind regards,

[Insert contact name]

Please note: The survey is anonymous and your data will be handled in accordance with the GDPR.

Tip: This should be emphasised even if you have already provided a privacy policy and information in advance.
