Surveys About Bullying at School and in the Workplace

Conduct surveys about bullying

Bullying is a distressing part of everyday life in many educational institutions and companies. Both pupils and employees are affected by bullying and cyberbullying. The emotional and physical abuse experienced by those affected is a serious problem and frequently leads to illness. Schools and companies are increasingly addressing bullying, often through prevention programmes. They identify potential incidents so that they can introduce suitable countermeasures where necessary.

Anonymous online surveys can be used to assess the current situation, including the frequency and severity of potential incidents. The findings provide a basis for strategies and concrete measures to prevent bullying.

What is bullying?

Bullying is the systematic, targeted harassment of a person over an extended period. Those affected are repeatedly intimidated, disadvantaged, socially isolated and excluded by one or more people in a stronger position. These harmful actions may be verbal (e.g. insults), non-verbal (e.g. derogatory gestures) or physical. Bullying occurs most often at school and in the workplace, but can also take place in other communities, such as residential areas, care homes and clubs, or online as cyberbullying. Among other consequences, bullying often leads to psychosomatic illness, loss of motivation, severe insecurity and pronounced distrust of others.

Possible causes include unresolved conflicts, simmering tensions and intense competitive pressure. Additional stressors and pressures at work contribute to a negative working environment and often create conditions in which bullying can develop.

Bullying harms not only those affected: companies also suffer the consequences indirectly. Incidents can lead to high staff turnover, increased sickness absence and lost productivity. For these reasons, many organisations now invest in prevention, train employees and managers in conflict management, and conduct online surveys to identify potential sources of conflict. Alongside surveys that address bullying directly, regular short pulse surveys can act as a barometer of employee sentiment. When repeated regularly, these short surveys reflect the current working environment and reveal negative trends.
