No clear goal is the most common and most damaging mistake in online surveys. If you start without a defined research question, you end up with data you cannot act on. Before you write the first question, be clear about what you want to find out and what you will do with the result.
Goal first, questions second
Write down which decision the survey should support. Every question has to serve that goal. A simple test: for each question, note what you would do with the answer. If nothing comes to mind, drop the question.
From goal to the right question
A vague goal leads to vague questions. “How satisfied are our customers?” is too broad as a goal. Better: “Do we want to expand our support? Then we need to know how satisfied customers are with our response time.” A concrete goal almost dictates what to ask and what to leave out.
Fewer questions, better aimed
A sharp goal keeps the survey short, because unnecessary questions fall away on their own. For more on keeping the questionnaire lean, see Too Many Questions.
