Table of Contents
The main section of the questionnaire contains most of the questions. To obtain as many responses as possible, make completion smooth and straightforward. Read our recommendations.
The main section of the survey: our recommendations
- Avoid overly complex matrix questions with too many items. They can overwhelm respondents. Distribute questions, explanatory text, images and text blocks evenly to avoid clusters of click options.
- Use skips, visibility rules and placeholders to personalise the questionnaire and response path. This shortens the questionnaire to the part relevant to each respondent.
Choose the question design and arrangement so that completing the questionnaire is smooth and pleasant.
You can decide whether to place all questions and text on one page or spread them across several. We recommend:
- Place questions across several pages, so that respondents need to scroll as little as possible. Grouping by question category and content can also be useful. The survey should always be clearly structured.
- Another advantage of several pages is that responses are submitted whenever the respondent clicks “Next”. If someone abandons the survey on page 4, all results up to that point are saved. If all questions are on one page and the respondent closes the window halfway through instead of clicking “Next”, you lose all results.
But note: if you have very few questions, it can make sense to place them all on one page. Participants can keep an overview and will not face an unexpected, very long questionnaire.
Closing the questionnaire
At the end, add a page containing only a text block, just as on the first page. Thank the respondent and, where appropriate, offer to keep them informed about the results or measures.
You can decide whether the participant journey ends on the final page or whether a redirect takes them to your website or another survey.
Further guidance and tips for the main section
The main section of the questionnaire is where you use dynamics such as visibility rules and skips. Shorten the questionnaire for the individual respondent and show only relevant questions and pages.
