Are there risks or disadvantages to online surveys? Various risks and disadvantages are often associated with online surveys. Our view is that online surveys do not have inherent disadvantages. They do involve certain risks, but these can be avoided or reduced, particularly by using the right survey tool.
Table of Contents
1. Security and data protection in online surveys
When surveys are conducted online, many people think of poor security or inadequate data protection. It is sensible to keep these issues in mind. With some survey software providers, data protection can indeed be a problem. If you make sure that your data is not stored in an open cloud and is kept within Germany, or at least within the EU, and choose a German provider accordingly, you can reduce the risk. Security online is achievable, just as it is with online banking.
2. Reaching participants
How well you can reach your target group online depends mainly on the audience and the distribution channel. Invitations can be sent by email, shared through a personal link or distributed via QR code. This works very well for some groups and less well for others. If you need to reach people who have limited digital access or rarely use online services, it may be sensible to include additional ways to take part. The real risk is therefore not the online survey itself, but using the wrong channel for the audience you want to reach.
3. Representativeness of the sample
An online survey is not automatically representative simply because many people take part. What matters is who you reach and how participants are selected. If mainly highly interested people respond, or some groups are hardly represented at all, the results can be biased.
Screening questions, quotas and weighting can help reduce this bias, but they cannot replace suitable sample planning. If you want to generalise the results to a wider population, decide before launch which groups need to be represented and how you can reach them as evenly as possible.
4. Dropouts and low response rates
Online surveys can also suffer from low response rates or early dropouts. How often this happens depends on factors such as the target group, topic, invitation, questionnaire length and survey design.
A clear invitation, a realistic estimate of completion time, a well-structured questionnaire and targeted reminders can all help. Incentives may also be useful for some audiences. One point is particularly important: a high response rate alone does not automatically make a survey reliable. Who actually took part matters as well.
5. Limiting multiple submissions
With open online surveys, the same person may sometimes take part more than once. The best way to deal with this depends on how open or controlled participation needs to be. Personalised one-time links or individual participation keys provide particularly clear control.
IP restrictions or cookies can provide additional signals, but they are not reliable on their own. Several legitimate participants may share the same IP address, while cookies can be deleted or blocked. The protection method should therefore fit the purpose of the survey without creating unnecessary barriers for genuine participants.
6. Social decontextualisation in an online environment
An online environment can reduce the influence of social norms. Social considerations may therefore become less prominent, while personal goals and wishes may come to the fore. In addition, a strong sense of anonymity and discretion can increase willingness to respond.
7. Human-computer interaction
Internet users are more selective, less patient and sometimes less careful. This needs to be considered when designing an online survey. By contrast, a static paper questionnaire offers far fewer options for variety or engagement, and no dynamic or individual response paths.
