Online Survey Mistakes: Too Many Questions

Too many questions are another common mistake in online surveys. “While the respondent is here, I might as well ask everything,” many people think. For a successful survey the opposite is true: ask only what is essential. The focus should be on the questions that are particularly relevant or contentious for you.

Do not ask everything at once

Your answer options must be complete, but your questions do not have to cover every conceivable dimension.

  • Wrong: having every property of a website rated at once, that is layout, usability, design, content, loading time, currency, navigation and so on.
  • Right: focus on the few decisive points.

Few questions per page

Spread your questions across manageable pages. One to three questions per page is usually enough. Endless scrolling down a single long page puts respondents off and lowers your completion rate.

Tip: start with a question about relevance, such as “What matters most to you?”. Then have only the points marked as important rated. Why should anyone rate something that does not matter to them? This way the questionnaire gets shorter for each respondent while your data quality stays the same or even improves.

Careful: too many questions lead to disorientation, high drop-out rates and boredom. The result is clicks without reading and frustrated respondents.
