Designing a questionnaire: what to consider when choosing the layout
The layout determines how questions, response options and input fields are arranged. A clear structure helps respondents understand the questionnaire quickly and complete it without unnecessary obstacles.
Answer layout
Response options should be clearly distinguishable. Where there are many choices, it can help to group related categories. Online questionnaires also make it clear whether single or multiple choice is expected. Consider whether a horizontal or vertical arrangement is easier to read, depending on the length of the response texts.
Input field layout
Match input fields to the response you expect: a short field for numbers, dates or brief entries, and a multi-line field for detailed comments. This lets respondents see what kind of response is expected and makes subsequent analysis clearer. Long comment fields should provide enough space for respondents to see what they have written as they type.
General question layout
A consistent layout for questions and responses makes the questionnaire easier to follow. Repeated design elements should not become monotonous, however: too many similar response categories can encourage people to read questions only superficially.
