Common mistakes when creating questionnaires

How to avoid common mistakes

Every questionnaire is unique – it pursues different objectives, is aimed at different participants and always has a different context.

Nevertheless, some rules apply to all questionnaires. This means that certain mistakes can occur in any questionnaire. To help you avoid these frustrating mistakes, we have put together some useful tips:

Useful tips for avoiding the most common mistakes when creating a questionnaire

Read on to find out what else you should consider when creating questionnaires with an online survey tool:

Imprecise answer options

Your answer options should always be complete and unambiguous and meet the criterion of mutual exclusivity. If these criteria are not met, participants may be left with only two choices: selecting an answer that does not apply or giving no answer at all. Common mistakes include omitting answer options or providing overlapping categories.

  • Incorrect: overlapping categories such as €0–€2, €2–€5 and €5–€10.
  • Correct: €0–€2, €3–€5 and more than €5.
  • Incorrect: incomplete categories such as ages 20–30, 30–50 and 50–60.
  • Correct: under 20, 20–30, 31–50 and over 50.
  • Incorrect: ambiguous categories such as frequency: 1–5, 5–10 and more than 10.
  • Correct: 1–5 times per week/day/year.
