How to promote employee engagement through workplace health management

Employee surveys as a key analysis tool

Satisfied, healthy and productive employees do not have to remain an out-of-reach business goal. Workplace health management can be the key to demonstrably higher employee satisfaction and engagement.

Digitalisation is not the only challenge companies will face in the coming years. Demographic change and an ageing workforce matter just as much. Workplace health measures are a good way to keep employees fit and healthy over the long term.

Why should companies invest in workplace health management?

The answer is simple: companies that invest in coordinated health measures have more productive and more satisfied employees. What is more, their employees are more engaged and feel valued at work. Workplace health management is therefore also an effective way to make your company stand out in securing skilled workers, HR policy and employer branding. However, workplace health management is not something the HR department plans and implements on its own. As a manager, board member or business leader, you play a decisive role in this change process.

The six-phase model of workplace health management

Workplace health management is introduced in several phases, and a six-phase model has proven effective. Setting clear objectives from the outset makes the path to successful workplace health management easier.

Phase one – Identify needs

Define your first objectives at this stage and determine the specific needs.

Phase two – Analysis

Analyse your employees’ tasks and workplaces within the organisation and identify weak points. Run your first employee surveys in this phase to gain more detailed insights from your employees.

Phase three – Intervention planning

Now make your objectives more specific and derive the first measures from the analysis results.

Phase four – Implementation

In the implementation phase, you put the first health measures into practice, such as back care classes or mindfulness courses.

Phase five – Evaluation

In the evaluation phase, you assess the results of the project. A follow-up employee survey is a good idea here, for example to measure satisfaction and identify room for improvement.

Phase six – Sustainability

To ensure that workplace health measures become firmly established in your organisation and continue to develop successfully over the long term, further analyses and continuous optimisation are recommended.

Employee surveys as an analysis tool for workplace health management

Employee surveys are a good way to assess the status quo before implementation and to derive recommendations for action. It is important to involve both your employees and your managers, who act as key communicators. Being transparent and open about the survey can increase participation. Tell your employees what you want to achieve with the survey and how the results will feed back into the organisation, and share the results once the survey is complete.
